Concepts: direct variation, factoring a GCF out of monomials and polynomial expressions, solving multistep inequalities, graphing vertical and horizontal translation of absolute value equations
Smart Studying- Prepare for the Final Exam next Wednesday
Next week Final Exam on Chp 1, 2, 6, Chp 3.1-3.4, Chp 8.1-8.5, and Chp 9.1-9.3
Look back at previous quizzes and tests. Are there concepts that you need to work on? Where can you find example problems for those concepts? Make a study plan which identifies your previous concept trouble areas and provides time for you to do a few of those types of problems or watch videos and then do those types of problems over the next week.
Book mark either class notes, IMPs or HW that will help you on the final exam next week. The final covers these chapters. Chp 1, 2, 6, Chp 3.1-3.4, Chp 8.1-8.5, Chp 9.1-9.3. Test will be open notes/binder but closed textbook.
Textbook Homework
PH 5-5 Direct Variation… we’ll do more of this after Winter Break
Watch and take notes: Prof Rob Bob https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps_YRWPdkfk&list=PLGbL7EvScmU7ZqJW4HumYdDYv12Wt3yOk&index=40 (Remember to take notes and after he does one problem, pause the video and do the other problems with him.)
PH 9-2… Factoring out a GCF as reverse distribution property
Handout SB pg 83 & 84 #6-18 These handouts are HERE as part of a larger gcf factoring packet. (You only need to do the pages indicated though. These page numbers are on the lower right hand side.) ANSWERS for SB 73-84 are here. Thanks to Mrs. Brennan for sharing her packet.
Re-read section 9-2 examples, Do pg. 463-4 # 1, 4, 10, 13, 16, 18, 19, 22, 23
Optional Videos
5 minute video by Anil Kumar on how to find the greatest common factor of two monomials
2 minute video by Brian McLogan how to find the greatest common factor of two monomials and another video factor out gcf of a polynomial expression such as (6a^3b^2 - 18a^2b)
PH 3.1-3.3 Inequalities… Remember if you multiply or divide by a negative you must reverse the inequality sign
Do pg. 151 “Check Point Quiz” Do #1, 3, 6, 8, 9, 10— this isn’t a quiz; it’s just to give you feedback on your comprehension.
PH 3.4 Multi-step inequalities - solve like an equation but remember what we do if we multiply or divide by a negative?
Read pg. 153-155, the do pg 156-157 #11, 13, 14, 34, 38, 39, 47-49, SQUARE 53, 54 77
Optional video demonstrating how to solve multi-step inequalities from The Magic of Math
If you need a review of how to graph inequalities on the number line, here’s a 3 minute video from Moo Moo Math and Science
PH Chp 6.7 Graphing Horizontal Translation of Absolute value equations - review
Remember, a translation is a slide: re-read examples 4 & 5 in section 6.7 then DO #17, 20, 23, 26
PH Chp 8.1-8.5 Exponents- Review
Review the examples in these sections. Make sure you have notes in your IMPS on how all the exponent rules in these sections.
PH 1-1 Translating words to math symbols-writing expressions…. (6)
HW PH Watch Translating words into symbols and numbers with Richard at Art of Problem Solving: (Word Problems Part 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNPWFe3zL4w&list=PLqiSsHAcyf9fcLxIYtr0mQfqyOOtLJmJ1&index=12)
Do pg. 8 #48-53
PREVIEW - PH 3.5 Preview compound inequalities
Take notes on this 15 minute video: Graphing, writing, and solving compound inequalities with The Magic of Math
Week 12 HW— Dec 12/13
HW is just get your GPO signed by your parents.
Otherwise no actual math problems to do.
I’ll see you in class on Tuesday January 9th.
I want to talk to parents about shifting the Tuesday class schedule just a tiny bit. Here’s my proposal— staggered arrival.
9-10 Algebra only (this is the same)
10:00-10:30 Intro to Algebra arrives
10:30-12:30 Pre-Algebra group arrives
Optional lunch 12:30 to 1:00
We can have our class Stay Late Party on a Tuesday in January too!
Here’s the CORRECTED answer key to the practice final; use this to help you study.
The answer to #8 on the first page has been corrected (55 degrees F is REALLY hot = 131 degrees F which is letter A!)
Test covers Chp 1, 2 (no motion problems), 6, Chp 3.1-3.4, Chp 8.1-8.5, Chp 9.1-9.3. In class test.
Test parameters
Open notes/homework/classwork/binder/calculator
Closed book, closed internet, closed parent/friend
1.75 hours in class on Wednesday
No partial credit and no re-submittal; this is a one shot test
28 questions combination of 6 and 8 points each. You get points for attaching the completed practice final to your real final exam.
No HW over winter break.
No homework, we will take the final exam in class. This way you are actually done when you walk out of class on Wednesday.
I’ll see you in class on Tuesday January 9th. We can have our class Stay Late Party on a Tuesday in January too!
