HW Checklist

Smart Studying

On our Desmos classroom do “Match My Parabola” activity

SQUARE: On our Desmos classroom do “Marble Slides: Parabolas”

GREENIE CLASSWORK…for the rest of the semester this is super bonus work. You’re welcome to do it if you have time. It’s a great review if you’re going into integrated math next year. But if you are short on time, focus on our textbook work.

This is Math 8 for those of you who are going to integrated math programs in HS. For everyone else it is review as well as a preview of some geometry. Answers to Greenie work are on a button above “Greenie Answer Keys”

These are super bonus pages (HEXAGON): worth an extra 5 points on your HW!

  • HEXAGON Page 26 Geometric Relationships: Parallel and Perpendicular Lines - finish

  • HEXAGON Page 28 Geometric Relationships: Coordinate Geometric - distance and midpoint formulas

  • HEXAGON 46 Graphing Lines: Solving Systems of Linear Equations by Graphing (do problem one by hand, then use Desmos to do the others)

NEW CONCEPTS

 PH 10.8 Using the Discriminant

Re-read section 10.8. Write the Property of the Discriminant definition in the your IMPs.

Do Check understandings 1-2 (but I recommend you watch a video first!)

Choose one of the support videos on the discriminant to watch and take notes. The Discriminant = b-squared - 4ac= what’s under the radical sign in the quadratic equation

PH 11.4 Operations with radical expressions

Re-read section 11.4. Add any definitions to your IMPs.

 Do Check understandings

Support Videos:

PH 11.5 Solving Radical EQ

Re-read section 11.5. Add any definitions to your IMPs.

Do Check understandings

Support Videos:

Rationalize the denominator - 4 examples (monomials and binomials with radicals in denominator Mario 5 minutes)

Using Conjugates to get rid of binomials with a radical in the denominator by creating a difference of squares to rationalize the denominator (9 minutes with Marty Brandl)

How to rationalize a denominator (in plain English, that means getting rid of a radical in a denominator.) Brian McLogan 4 minutes using conjugates to create a difference of two squares

PREVIEW PH 12.1 Intro to Inverse variation compared to direct variation (not tested)

VIDEO Is this direct variation or inverse variation? Mario 6 minutes

Week 26

study for the final exam next week

Week 26 HW May 14/15

No HW this week to turn in. Just study for the final which is next Tuesday in class.

Final Examination details

  • Covers chapters 1-9, emphasis on 3-9. I will include roughly an equal number of problems from chapters 3-9, fewer from chp 1-2. Probably about 5-8 problems per chapter. There will be a few bonus problems.

  • 50% of problems will be example problems from the textbook or study guide problems. So you will have already done half of these problems.

  • Open: IMPS, Chp Test Notecards, old quizzes or tests, calculator.

  • Closed: Book, HW, neighbor, internet.

Final Study Recommendations

  • Determine which chapters are harder for you. Spend your time on those chapters to turn your weaknesses into strengths.

    • Do that by re-reading and doing problems within each section that you find hard. (Possible problems include examples, check understandings, end of chp study guide problems.) It is not enough to simply re-read hard sections. You need to attempt a few problems. Anticipate that later chapters (7-9) will be probabily be harder, as we’ve spent less time using that material, whereas the chapters you did first semester (1-6) we’ve kept reviewing and using for months now.

    • Use your test notecards to do the problems. That will help you give your test notecards a trial run.

    • Videos: You could also watch videos that are posted on the Algebra Resource page to help with challenging sections. Perhaps watch 2-3 videos a day until the test. To make the most of those videos, after the first example, pause and do the next problem before the teacher does it.

    • Refine/finish your notecards: Use that experience to refine your test notecards. What definitions/examples/formulas did you need on the cards but didn’t have?

  • Make sure you at least have notecards for chp 3-9. (You could have notecards for chp 1-2 as well if you want). If there are problems that are hard, include EXAMPLES of how to do these problems not just definitions and formulas.

Bonus (optional) GREENIE WORK — for page 30 you’ll need to look at the Math 8 textbook
