Deepening Understanding

Chp 10 Review pgs 567-571, #3-72 multiples of three

PH 11.4 Operations with radical expressions

Re-read section 11.4. Watch one support video and take notes to refresh your memory. Support Videos:

Do pg 603 # 1, 7, 10, 12, 16, 22, 28, 30

PH 11.5 Solving Radical EQ

Re-read section 11.5. Watch one of the following support videos and take notes.

Support Videos:

Rationalize the denominator - 4 examples (monomials and binomials with radicals in denominator Mario 5 minutes)

Using Conjugates to get rid of binomials with a radical in the denominator by creating a difference of squares to rationalize the denominator (9 minutes with Marty Brandl)

How to rationalize a denominator (in plain English, that means getting rid of a radical in a denominator.) Brian McLogan 4 minutes using conjugates to create a difference of two squares

Do pg 610 # 1, 4, 7, 9, 11, 15, 17

New Concepts

PH 10.8 Using the Discriminant

Re-read section 10.8. Watch a different support video from among these and add to your video notes from Wk 25. The Discriminant = b-squared - 4ac= what’s under the radical sign in the quadratic equation

Do pg. 556 # 4, 5, 16 square #1

Preview these concepts

12.3 Simplifying Rational Expressions, aka algebraic fractions

Watch this video on simplifying fractions with rational expressions and restricting the variables (Algebra 6.1) 14 minute video with Nancy Pi and take notes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7w_aRlVagU then try to do one of the problems before she does so pause the video.

12.4 Multiplying and Dividing Rational Expressions, aka, Algebraic Fractions Using Factoring

Watch this video on dividing fractions that have quadratic expressions in them which requires factoring with Brian M. dividing fractions with quadratic expressions (aka dividing rational expressions) Brian also shows you the educated guess and check method of factoring a quadratic expression

Fractional Equations method #2 solve as proportion —> cross multiplication (Algebra chp 7.4) Prof Rob Bob video (but he doesn’t go into fractions that need to be factored first as in example 3. You’ll need to read the book for that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=De5ghpLlkUQ&list=PLGbL7EvScmU7ZqJW4HumYdDYv12Wt3yOk&index=32

12.6 Adding and Subtracting Rational Expressions, aka algebraic fractions (choose two videos)

Easy version by Math and Science adding and subtracting algebraic fractions (fractions with variables and polynomials part 1)

7 minute video from Mario on Adding and Subtracting Algebraic fractions and a longer 10 minute video here

Find a LCD for unlike denominators (multiply by a strategic one) to add and subtract algebraic fractions with unlike polynomial denominators by Brian McLogan

GREENIE CLASSWORK… HEXAGON BONUS extra 5 points!

  • NEW Page 30 Geometric Relationships: Transformations - rotation #5 & 6 — you need to use the Green Math 8 textbook to tackle this.

  • REVIEW Page 40 Solving Systems of Equations - odds

  • REVIEW Page 48 Data, Prediction and Linear Functions - Linear Best Fit Models

Week 28 HW

May 28/29

No homework over summer.

I do recommend, however, that in August you set aside two hours to watch this video reviewing all the math you learned this year. The video is only one hour long, but you should pause it to do problems with Mario, so watch with paper and pencil. This way, you’ll hit the ground running when your geometry or Math 2Honors classes start.

Review sample Algebra 1 final exam problems with Mario -1 hour 80 problems covering 33 types of problems

Smart Studying

GREENIE CLASSWORK… we start this in class. Finish at home

(This is Math 8 for those of you who are going to integrated math programs in HS. For everyone else it is review as well as a preview of some geometry.)

Are the following pages complete? Answers to Greenie work are on a button above “Greenie Answer Keys”

  • REVIEW Page 40 Solving Systems of Equations - finish (evens)

  • REVIEW Page 49 Data, Prediction and Linear Functions: Linear Functions— graph, slope, intercepts, writing an equation or rule
